It is important to remember dogs cannot eat the same foods as humans. In fact, many of the foods we would think are safe for our pet are just the opposite. Make sure you know all of the foods which may harm your puppy before he or she comes home. If you have children in your home, educate them on what not to feed their new friend.

We have provided some great links in this section to help you understand which foods and plants may harm your puppy. Your veterinarian is another excellent resource and should be able to provide you with additional information.

It is important to take a good look around the outside of your home. We are often unaware of plants, mushrooms, and berry bushes which may be toxic to your puppy.

If you use grass or plant fertilizer, make sure to keep your puppy away from those areas as many of the fertilizers used today are very toxic to animals. If you have a gardener, let them know you have a new pet and ask them to avoid using pesticides or fertilizers in the areas your pet might frequent. Rodent or insect traps or poisons used around your property should be picked up or removed from puppy’s reach as these can be very harmful for your dog.
